Peony soaps, a regal and feminine fragrance

peony fragrance for soap

Peony is an ancient plant, already known in Ancient Greece and handed down to our times due to its therapeutic properties. There are essentially two types of peony in existence: herbaceous peonies descended from the European Paeonia officinalis or common or garden peony, which flower in May and are most widespread at our latitudes, and tree peonies, commonly found in the East and particularly in China, which flower in spring. Today, peonies are used as ornamental plants in gardens, partly because they are robust and easy to grow. However, they also possess recognised healing properties and it is no coincidence that the origin of the name ‘peony’ can be traced back to the healing deity of Greek mythology who was called ‘Paeon’ and said to have used this flower to heal the god Pluto. Peony root was used in the past as a painkiller and particularly for treatment of epilepsy to combat seizures.

The Peony’s symbolism is closely tied to the world of deities; indeed, in Ancient Greece, it was considered the only flower grown on Mount Olympus and therefore a symbol of immortality, and it held similar significance in the Orient, where it was the Emperor’s flower and consequently known as the queen of flowers. Peony flowers, large and yielding blossoms just once a year, come in a variety of colours, from white to yellow through various shades of pink. The peony’s scent is delicate and pleasant, somewhat similar to that of a rose, with floral notes evocative of femininity and underlying hints of regality.

Fig soaps: summer freshness for the skin

soap with fig fragrance

The fig tree is one of the world’s most ancient cultivated plants, already known to early Ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean civilisations. A fig leaf was also used by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to cover themselves after eating the forbidden fruit which, according to some sources, may actually have been not an apple but a fig. The fig fruit is a symbol of knowledge but also of fertility, since its shape was compared to the female form. The fig tree that produces edible fruits – on average twice a year, in early summer and, with larger and juicier fruits, at the end of the season – is also female (whereas the male tree produces pollen).

The fig’s scent comes from its leaves, which provide a distinctively summery, green and alluring fragrance. The leading quality of fig essence is its freshness; indeed, the fresh notes prevail over the woody and fruity chords of this fragrance, leaving a pleasant, velvety sensation on the skin, like the caress of a gentle summer breeze.
